SilverCloud by Amwell: Unleashing the power of digital CBT

by | Jan 24, 2023

Liam Ryan, Country Manager Ireland for SilverCloud® by Amwell, explains how collaboration with clinicians is adding value to mental health care delivery

In Ireland today, we are all acutely aware of the challenges faced within the health system and the urgent need for impactful mental health care.

Last summer the first comprehensive assessment of the occurrence of multiple mental health disorders and attempted suicide in the State was carried out by academics from Maynooth University, National College of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin. It found that 42 per cent of Irish adults have a mental disorder.

Modern clinical guidelines recommend internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (iCBT) – also known as Digital CBT – as a firstline intervention.

SilverCloud® by Amwell, an Irish founded platform, provides digital therapeutic interventions across mental health care and long-term conditions.

Its asynchronous and fully-supported model (by our team of mental healthcare professionals) allows for a quadrupling of care delivery compared to traditional face-to-face services only.

SilverCloud® provides over 40 evidencebased programmes, including Children & Young People (CYP) mental health care inclusive of adolescents, parents, and carers, Long Term Conditions (LTC) and well-being programmes.

The interactive programmes are trusted by global health providers, health insurers, corporate employers and higher education institutions to deliver effective support at scale.

Our solution is clinically validated and supported through robust evidence-based behavioural change programmes, empowering users to take control of their mental health and well-being.

Our Digital Health Science Team, led by Chief Science Officer Dr. Derek Richards, has an extensive body of work speaks volumes to the dedication and passion for using evidence based research to improve the mental health and well-being of over users worldwide.

  • For individuals presenting with severe clinical symptoms of anxiety and depression (up to 50 per cent of referrals), up to 80 per cent will demonstrate significant reductions in symptoms post-treatment.
  • Working with our trained and qualified mental healthcare professional over an eight-week treatment period, on average 65 per cent of individuals will achieve clinically significant improvement which means a reduction of 6+ on PHQ-9 (a diagnostic tool for the presence and severity of depression) and 4+ on GAD-7 (another self-reported questionnaire for screening and severity measuring of generalised anxiety disorder).
  • 56 per cent of users with a clinical diagnosis of depression or anxiety (approximately 80 per cent of referrals) were diagnosis free at three months.
  • Sustainable results with a 50 per cent further decrease in symptoms scores at 12 months.

Engaging with clinicians across Ireland The Health Service Executive (HSE) and SilverCloud® are working together to provide access nationally to evidence-based digital mental health and well-being support 24/7. Clinicians and mental healthcare professionals can now provide their patients and clients of 18+ years with access to an eight-week supported programme within 24 hours.
